25 Canadian Students evacuated from Haiti due to political unrest

A total number of 25 students have been evacuated from Haiti due to the political unrest in the country

A total number of 25 school students from Quebec and three chaperones stuck due to violent anti-government protests were able to leave Haiti on Sunday.

"We are on the plane" back to Montreal, one of the chaperones confirmed in a message to AFP.

Apart from the students, employees of Canada's temporarily-shuttered embassy were also heading home aboard the aircraft due to the issue.

The day before, a group of 131 Canadian tourists were evacuated via helicopter from their beachside resort in Haiti after being trapped for one week at the site due to the ongoing unrest.

The tourists were moved in groups to the Port-au-Prince international airport, where they boarded a flight to Canada, Transat stated.

Canada released an official statement warning its citizens against traveling to Haiti, an advisory issued after the temporary closure of its embassy in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.

Since the first week of February, at least seven people have died as Haiti has been lurched into political unrest, with day to day activities and business paralyzed by protests and barricades in big towns and cities.

According to reports, the protesters are said to be angry at soaring inflation and the alleged mishandling of nearly US$2 billion in Venezuelan oil relief, thereby demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise.
