Naomi Osaka Wins Australian Open Final to Seal Back to Back Grand Slam Victory
Naomi Osaka has sealed back-to-back grand slam titles with her win in an enthralling Australian Open final which follows her victory in the 2018 US Open.
Kvitova, who is playing in her first final since the career-threatening knife attack, appeared to be fading as Osaka returned her serve in masterclass fashion. But Osaka then went into meltdown, blowing three championship points at 5-3 in the second set, with Kvitova battling back to win the game. In the next game, serving for the match, Osaka struggled and handed Kvitova two break points with a double fault before allowing her to level the set at 5-5. The Czech player went on to win the set as Osaka appeared furious with herself.
But in the deciding set, Osaka rallied herself and appeared much more like her old self winning three games in a row to open a 3-1 lead before again letting Kvitova back in at 4-3 when victory seemed all but secured. However, Osaka held it together, and as drops of rain began to fall, served out the final game – though not before blowing another championship point – to seal the set 6-4 and in the process confirming her victory. Congratulations to Naomi Osaka, Naomi Osaka Parent, and her Camp, what a game to end the Australian opens’ Women final.
In the final, Osaka beat Petra Kvitova 7-6 (2) 5-7 6-4 in Melbourne but, despite dominating her opponent for much of the second set, she blew three championship points to give her opponent a comeback hope and then again stuttered in the deciding set.
The 21 year old Japanese drew first blood with her opening set victory but saw two set points come and go in the 12th game of a high-quality contest. However, she dominated the tie-break by surging into a 5-1 lead, going on to take it 7-2.
However, in the second set, she fell behind after being broken but fought back to 4-2 from 0-2 down, finding impetus and momentum as she scored back-to-back breaks against Kvitova while winning four straight games.
