2018/19 Champions League Group Stage Permutations - Who can Still Qualify?

2018/19 Champions League Group Stage Permutations: This season’s Champions League group stage matches enters its final matchday and some clubs have their hopes of progressing to the knock out stages hanging by a thread, a tiny one at that. The champions league has actually entered the period where coaches, fans and pundits brings out their calculator and pen to mark out possible escape routes for clubs who can still qualify from their group. In today’s article we will show the permutations relating to each of the eight groups.

For some clubs, their team have already won the group, some has sealed progression to the next stage whereas some still have their group as competitive as when the draw for the group stages was actually made. For example, fans of last year’s finalists – Liverpool and Real Madrid – have contrasting emotions after matchday 5. While Los Blancos are through to the next round, Liverpool fans can simply rely on another Anfield Night against Napoli to secure progression. So follow the individual group permutations to see those who still fancy their chances of progression.

Group Stage Permutations Series 1

Group A: The fates of all the teams are pretty much sealed, except for the decider on who tops the group.

Although Atletico Madrid are currently occupying that position, a loss against Club Brugge on the final matchday, coupled with a win for Dortmund against Monaco would mean an exchange of places between the Spanish and German teams. Asides that, the group will simply remain as it is with Club Brugge having the chance to compete in the Europa League.

Group B: The group tagged as the “Group of Death” when the draw was made has seen an easy ride for Barcelona who have sealed first place with only the second place up for either Spurs or Inter.

Tottenham leads Inter Milan on away goals which means that if they can win their final game, they will progress. But this isn’t an easy task given they would be facing Barcelona at Camp Nou, so pundits fancy qualification for inter. If Spurs can fight for a point in the match, Inter have no option but to beat Eindhoven and if Spurs lose, Inter will only need a draw to secure qualification. All eyes watching as we await who joins Barcelona in the knockout round and who relegates to the Europa league. PSV are already out of Europe competition this season.

Group C: The group pundits term as “Group to watch”, this is arguably the most interesting group going into the final matchday.

Napoli are guaranteed to progress if they draw, or if they lose and PSG are beaten. For PSG, they will be through with a victory in their last match or if Liverpool do not win theirs. For Liverpool, they must win to have any chance to progress. Provided PSG wins, Liverpool must win 1-0 or by at least two goals margin to secure qualifications and lastly, If Liverpool, Paris and Napoli all finish on nine points, the English club would finish first based on the three-way head-to-head, with second place hanging on the scoreline at Anfield. So an enticing game at Anfield is a prospect as we keep our fingers crossed as we await the final standing for this group. Red Star Belgrade are certainly out of Europe for this year, however credit must be given to them for their performance in their fortress.

Group D
: The progression to the champions league knockout stages is already sealed in this group and the order of progression is also known.

All that remains to fight for is third place and a chance to remain in Europe playing the Uefa Europa league. Porto are through as group winners while Schalke finish second. Lokomotiv Moscow need to win so as to stand any chance of making it to third place and reaching the Europa League.

This concludes series 1 on 2018/19 Champions League Group Stage Permutations, watch out for series 2 as we will reveal the possible permutations for the remaining four groups. We keep our fingers crossed and hope the final match day is worth the wait and time.
